World Cup: Soccer fever comes to South Africa

EmailPrint This Post Print This Post

With less than two weeks to go before the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and the Super 14 rugby season having just ended, football (or soccer as we call it) has now moved to centre stage in South Africa.

I will be attending the opening match on June 11 between Mexico and South Africa (also known as Bafana Bafana), and all Slovenia’s pool games – against Algeria, America and England. And don’t think Slovenia will just be an also-ran – based on much number-crunching by none other than JP Morgan, Slovenia could make it all the way through to the quarter-final.

For those not familiar with my diplomatic activities, I represent Slovenia as Honorary Consul in South Africa. This involvement will be keeping me rather busy over the next month – with my duties ranging from importing World Cup-related cargo, to organizing functions and consular contact points for supporters to hosting a great many Slovenian visitors. All very exciting stuff, but the bad news is that blogging will unfortunately be taking a back seat while I am involved in this once-in-a-lifetime event and away from home for most of the next few weeks.
